KHÁM PHÁ SỨC MẠNH CỦA NGÔN NGỮ CÙNG HỌC SINH LỚP 5 KINSHASA
[English below]

DISCOVERING THE POWER OF LANGUAGE WITH GRADE 5 KINSHASA

“It’s gone! It’s really gone!”
A single sentence can convey very different meanings depending on the speaker’s tone of voice, facial expressions, and the context in which it is spoken. This is exactly what Grade 5 Kinshasa students at The Dewey Schools Hai Phong explored for themselves during their Vietnamese Language lesson, “Language Workshop and Play” – Session 1: Getting Started with the Workshop.

Rather than learning about communication through theory alone, students experienced the power of language firsthand by creating and performing a short play titled “It’s Gone! It’s Really Gone!” From discussing ideas and assigning roles to preparing introductions and stepping into character, each student had the opportunity to apply the five-sentence speaking structure they had learned, while practising communication and exchanging information between characters.

Were their words clear enough? What were their tone of voice and expressions conveying? Were they truly listening to one another, or simply interpreting the story through their own assumptions?

Through the situations in the play, students discovered that communication goes beyond words alone. The same word, “gone,” can convey different meanings depending on how it is spoken and the context in which it is used. To help others understand their message correctly, speakers need to choose their words carefully and express themselves appropriately. Listeners, in turn, need to pay attention to tone of voice, body language, and the context of the conversation.

Through this activity, the lessons about language were not simply handed to students as ready-made answers. Instead, they learned by experiencing, observing, asking questions, and drawing their own conclusions. They had opportunities to express their opinions, experiment with different ways of communicating ideas, and make adjustments when they realised their message was not yet clear.

This is how Literature and Vietnamese Language at Dewey help students develop a deeper understanding of the power of language. By learning to express themselves precisely, listen attentively, and see a story from another person’s perspective, students build a strong foundation for reading comprehension, essay writing, analysis, and creativity in the years ahead. Beyond academic skills, they are also learning how to communicate their thoughts in ways others can understand, while remaining open to understanding what others are trying to say.

Today’s lesson was just the starting point of the Language Workshop project. Parents, stay tuned for the exciting outcomes that Grade 5 students at Dewey Hai Phong will share as they bring the full project to life!
