WHEN ADULTS REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO BE CHILDREN

The livestream “Adults Were Children Once, Too” wrapped up last night, but the stories it brought to light may continue to resonate with many parents.

The conversation began with childhood photographs of the guests. It was a fitting reminder of a line from The Little Prince: to understand children, adults sometimes need to remember what it felt like to be a child themselves.

Over 90 minutes, family stories were explored from different perspectives. The three guests came from different generations, professions, and life experiences, yet they shared a common desire: to understand their children better and walk alongside them as they grow.
For TV editor and presenter Đỗ Hương Giang, this means learning to respect the individual pace of development and unique personalities of her twin children. For Lê Minh Hằng, MA, it means navigating the difficult tension between the path parents believe is best and the field of study their children genuinely wish to pursue. Associate Professor Lê Văn Hảo, PhD, brought insights shaped by years of advising and working with parents and students, as well as his involvement in Positive Discipline programs.

Students Nguyễn Mai Phương and Nguyễn Như Khôi also offered thought-provoking perspectives. When children face difficulties, what do they really want their parents to do? Why do they sometimes find it easier to open up to a stranger online than to their own parents? Their reflections reminded us that the distance between family members does not always stem from a lack of love. Sometimes, it grows from things left unsaid or from words that have not been met with the understanding and listening they need.
[

] During the Roundtable Corner segment, viewers shared real-life situations of their own: children withdrawing and refusing to talk; children becoming irritable when things do not go their way; and parents and children who both want the best for each other but still struggle to find common ground.
Drawing on their own experiences, the guests explored what might lie beneath children's reactions and suggested ways for parents to listen, communicate, and support their children more effectively.

The livestream concluded with a small challenge: “Disconnect to Reconnect” — setting aside one screen-free hour to reconnect through family conversations, sharing, and attentive listening.
How did your family take on this challenge? Was it a phone-free family meal, a walk together, a game, or simply spending a little more time sitting side by side? Share your experience in the comments. The Nghề Làm Cha Mẹ community would love to hear your family's story! [
