GROWING THROUGH OPPORTUNITIES TO TRY, TO FAIL

Traveling halfway around the globe to the unfamiliar United States, Cao Hoang Chau Anh (Former student of Grade 12 Dublin) showed no hesitation or anxiety about her new journey. On the contrary, Chau Anh confidently embodied the “Dewey DNA”: dynamic, self-directed, responsible, ready to adapt and embrace challenges.

As the Valedictorian of The Dewey Schools Hai Phong in the 2024 National High School Graduation Examination, the recipient of 6 major scholarships, and currently a sophomore majoring in Business Analytics at Stockton University (USA), Chau Anh is often seen as the quintessential “golden child”. Yet before coming to Dewey, she, too, was once fearful, reserved, and hesitant to begin something new. Thanks to the unconditional trust of her teachers, to the opportunities she was given and the responsibilities entrusted to her, Chau Anh gradually stepped out of her comfort zone, dared to try, dared to fail, and ultimately “broke free from her cocoon”.

The first time she founded and operated the Dreamory Sound Charity Club. The first time she stood on the grand stage of D-Show 22, joining hands to inspire the community during the Covid pandemic. The first time she authored her debut book titled One Step from Passion, and many other “firsts” under the roof of Dewey…. These very “first times” shaped a highly distinctive application profile, enabling Chau Anh to secure multiple scholarships from prestigious universities such as Depauw University, Stockton University, Montclair State University,...

Alongside the spirit of “daring to act, daring to fail”, another quality nurtured at Dewey that Chau Anh deeply cherishes is self-directed learning.

“Projects at Dewey often required us to actively seek knowledge, information, and resources beyond textbooks. This is also the way universities in the U.S. approach learning. Assignments are usually open-ended, closely connected to real-world contexts, and require students to research, conduct surveys, and present their personal viewpoints. I think being exposed to this learning approach since high school helped me avoid feeling overwhelmed or lost when starting university.”

And on university lecture halls, there are many moments when Chau Anh quietly says to herself, “Thank you, Dewey”. It is when she presents and debates confidently in front of international peers with clear articulation. It is when she applies leadership skills honed through the Dreamory Sound Charity Club to participate in community projects and international student club activities. Or during moments of writing proposals, presenting plans, defending viewpoints…, none of which would have been easy without the proactiveness and confidence cultivated during her high school years.

Above all, what Chau Anh treasures and feels most grateful for throughout her time at Dewey is the companionship of all teachers at The Dewey Schools Hai Phong, especially Mr. Dermot and Ms. Hai Thanh, who have been like “godparents”, always ready to guide, encourage, and instill confidence so that she can stand firm on her journey of growth and pursuit of dreams.

Perhaps what Dewey has given Chau Anh is not merely knowledge or a ticket to step into the world, but a resilient inner strength to go the long distance. The inner strength of a young person who dares to commit, dares to take responsibility for her own choices. And when granted the autonomy to grow in such a way, Chau Anh has not only gone far, but gone steadily. Because ultimately, growth does not begin with perfection, but with an environment that trusts students enough to allow them to try, to fail, and to become the best version of themselves.
